Charlie Brown thought he would take a break from baseball and take up archery. His friend and advisor, Lucy, approached him one day while he was practicing. She became puzzled as she saw him shoot one arrow after another. After he had shot several arrows, he went over to the board fence and drew a target around each arrow. “Charlie Brown,” she screams, “that’s not right. You always do things the wrong way and you are wrong again. You are supposed to draw the target first and then shoot at it!” “I know,” he said. “But if I do it my way I never miss.”
I thought as I read that episode, there are people all over the world who treat their eternal salvation the same way. That is, they have a theory on how they will get to heaven. They won’t go God’s way, they will draw their own target. God warns us of such thinking in Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
Yes, Charlie Brown may get away with it with his arrow-who cares? But our eternal soul needs to hit the mark every time, and that is faith in Jesus Christ, the only way to heaven!
