DEVOTIONAL BIBLE STUDY: “What Shall We Name Him?”
|
Dear fellow worker of the Christian Worship Hour:
When a child is born, the first thing is to name him. Here is One Whose Name is above every name. (Philippians 2:10, 11). The prophet Isaiah told us His Name 700 years before He was born.
“... His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God,
the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
Just think about that NAME:
v HIS NAME IS “WONDERFUL”. Like a diamond that flashes beauty no matter which way it is turned, so the Lord Jesus is wonderful no matter which way you look at Him. For instance, look at His nature---God and man in one person. Friend, there has never been such a person before and there will never be another again. Jesus Christ is unique. Jesus’ teachings are wonderful because they tell us the way to God and heaven. There is only one door into heaven, and it is labeled “JESUS”. (John 14:6; Ephesians 3:18, 19). Jesus becomes more wonderful the more you know Him!
v HIS NAME IS “COUNSELOR”. And boy do we need a counselor! We are on a wilderness journey with pathways leading everywhere and all looking good. But the end of the trial is disaster except for one Way, the ONLY way, Jesus. Jesus is able to give us wise counsel for in Him is all wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:3). Because of His wisdom, He never makes a mistake, so we can trust His guiding hand. The problem is that some of us do not listen, we do our own thing and it flops. Jesus never has a failure. (Psalm 48:14; John 14:1).
v HIS NAME IS “THE MIGHTY GOD”. Men and nations like to think of themselves as powerful and mighty---but look at the mess the whole world is in due to these wonderful so-called leaders. Can the world’s leaders ever straighten out the mess they have brought us to? Only God in His might and power can turn things around. And because He is Almighty, we need never fear in this life or the next! (Isaiah 9:7; Psalm 46:7; Psalm 86:10).
v HIS NAME IS “THE EVERLASTING FATHER”. This does not mean that the Son is also the Father because each Person in the Trinity is distinct. It is better translated, “Father of Eternity” meaning that Jesus is the Originator of all things that exist. Can you imagine it, Jesus was His earthly name, but in fact, Jesus never had a beginning or an ending---He is eternal. The events of this life are but like a wisp of smoke but our Lord is the eternal and everlasting Rock of Ages! Isn’t that great? (Psalm 93:1, Isaiah 64:8).
v HIS NAME IS “THE PRINCE OF PEACE”. He came to bring peace, but we will never have that peace until we personally make peace with God by accepting His Son into our life and are born again! In the home, or the church, or society---there can never be peace until we have the Prince of Peace in our hearts and lives. So we need to be sure we have placed our faith in Jesus, and personally asked Him into our heart and then we can have peace. But we must not stop there; we must be peacemakers telling others about what Jesus has done for us, and urging others to trust Him. (II Corinthians 5:20; Psalm 126:3; Psalm 47:6; Revelation 5:13).
So, we rejoice in Jesus whose birthday we celebrate this month. What a joy it is to know Him, and if you know Him, you will love Him. No way around it.
And so we send out the good news all over the world! We thank all of you for your prayers and gifts, without which we would not carry on. We have no other source of income but through God’s people, but that is sufficient as you all give as God leads.
God bless you, and a MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS! In our Savior’s love,
Pastor Salem
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace,
good will toward men. Luke 2:14

fortunate to be in your homes each week where we rejoice in our Savior.
This month especially, we remember the birth of our Lord Jesus and the reason He came – to die
for our sins and strengthen us in our faith.
May you and your family have a very blessed Christmas and joyous New Year!
