Cathy Rigby was a member of the United States Women’s Gymnastics at Munich in 1972. Many remember the ’72 Olympics because it was the year the terrorists struck. But nobody remembers Cathy Rigby, a girl that had her heart set on winning the gold medal. It was all she lived for. She did everything right and it looked as though she may win it all. But it was not to be, and she failed to win the gold medal. After her event she sought out her mother. Weeping uncontrollably, she threw her arms around her mother, and cried, “Mother, I’m sorry, but I did my best!” “We know that and God knows that,” replied the mother, and then added, “Doing your best is much better than being best.” What was that again? “Doing your best is much better than being best.” Right on! St. Paul said the same thing, only used different words. Listen to him in I Corinthians four, verse two: “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” All that God asks of us is that we remain faithful to the end. We may not win the gold, But we can win the Father’s commendation. And the beauty of it all, every last one of us can be faithful.
